Do They Paint the Ice?

Ice Rink Painting Process

White paint mixed with water is sprayed on the ice. Two to three coats cover the surface, which is sealed by a water spray that freezes. The ice stays from September to May. Six players per team are on the ice, one being the goalie. The ice is 3/4 inch thick and chilled to 16° Fahrenheit. To start the game, the referee drops the puck between players’ sticks. They fight for possession.

Ice Rink Construction Details

Underneath lies insulation and heated concrete, preventing ground freezing to crack the rink. The ice, 3/4 inch thick, withstands sharp skates. Logos utilize fabric decals topped with sprayed ice. Rink costs range $2-$7 million. Outdoor rinks use lumber, plywood, or commercial boards. Recommended size is 60′ by 120′.

Components of Paint

Paint comprises titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, and calcium carbonate pigments. White paint improves visibility. In 1949-50 the NHL painted ice to better see pucks. Arena ice naturally appears gray, dulling contrast.
